The Maryland Indian Heritage Trail: A tool for large landscape conservation

For the Maryland Indian Tourism Association, the concept of a trail seemed a perfect method for tying together the stories of  native people and the landscapes they have traversed for thousands of years. But how do you create a visitor experience for a trail that depends largely on stories and the imagination? This paper discusses the evolution of the Maryland Indian Heritage Trail, and explores how highlighting indigenous ways of paying attention to observable relationships within the environment can help in the long term preservation of large landscapes.
