Building the CHAT: Lessons learned and challenges met.  This session will provide audience members/attendees information on how the Western Governors’ Association (WGA) Crucial Habitat Assessment Tool (CHAT) was developed, its scientific foundations, how the states and their partners developed the tool over the large and varied scientific, policy, and administrative landscapes, and how it is being manifested now via the web in use and application.

Throughout the development of the CHAT, states faced significant challenges including short timeframes, limited resources, and policy and political issues.  This topic will explore some of the most significant challenges and accomplishments of this unprecedented collaboration.
