Biographical Sketch: Mark J. Bouman is the Chicago Region Program Director in the Science Action Center of the Division of Science and Education at The Field Museum, where he oversees the museum’s interdisciplinary conservation and cultural heritage work in the Chicago region. The Science Action Center’s work takes a number of forms: it includes conservation, ecological restoration, environmental leadership development and stewardship, creative placemaking, climate change adaptation, green infrastructure planning, and cultural heritage planning and development.
Prior to coming to the Museum, he was Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Geography at Chicago State University. While there he led the development of the University’s Neighborhood Assistance Center, the Calumet Environmental Resource Center, and the CSU GIS Laboratory and he was a co-facilitator of the establishment of the Lake Calumet Ecosystem Partnership. He was the Project Director on a map of the Calumet Region for Chicago Wilderness that has been an important touchstone for current planning work in that landscape. He is active in regional affairs: he serves as President of the Calumet Heritage Partnership, on the Steering Committee of the Calumet Stewardship Initiative, and on the Millennium Reserve Steering Committee. Mark has an undergraduate degree in Geography from Valparaiso University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Geography from the University of Minnesota.
