Biographical Sketch: Dr. Hayes is President and CEO of the Accokeek Foundation at Piscataway Park. She is co-chair of the Potomac River Heritage Tourism Alliance and serves on the National Park Service’s Indigenous Cultural Landscapes Team. She was a Noyce Leadership Fellow in 2012 and is a past-recipient of an American Antiquarian Society Fellowship for Creative and Performing Artists and Writers. Before receiving her doctorate in American Studies from the State University of New York at Buffalo, she was a professional actress and playwright and continues to practice her craft when time allows. With composer/lyricist Joan Cushing, she wrote ”Breast in Show,” a musical about breast cancer. Her play “Bedside Manners” on doctor/nurse communication was recently published by Cornell UniversityPress, and her new solo performance “Finding the Light” was featured at an international conference in The Hague in April. The play follows Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Marissa Roth’s personal and professional journey with the story of women and war using photographs from Roth's exhibit "One Person Crying: Women and War."
