Biographical Sketch:
Joe Watkins, a member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, became the Supervisory Anthropologist and the Chief of the Tribal Relations and American Cultures Program of the National Park Service in Washington, DC, in 2013. He was the Director of the Native American Studies Program at the University of Oklahoma from 2007-2013, and an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico from 2003-2007. Watkins has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Society for American Archaeology and the Plains Anthropological Society, as well as on numerous committees of international, national and regional anthropological organizations. His study interests concern the ethical practice of anthropology and the study of anthropology’s relationships with descendant communities and populations, including American Indians, Australian Aboriginals, New Zealand Maori, and the Japanese Ainu.
